Denver Schools See Value in Technology

No matter where you go in this nation, you will be faced with computers. Computers run ATM machines. Computers power the registers at the check-out line at your local grocery store. Computers turn the gas pumps on and off. They even help run the traffic lights and train signals. Computers are prevalent throughout almost every workplace, and being computer literate is a must for anyone living and interacting in today’s society.

Denver Schools need to ensure that its students are tech-savvy and possess the knowledge they need to understand and use the technologies they encounter on a daily basis. While a 2nd grade student in the Denver Schools may not have much need to use an ATM machine, the keyboarding skills they learn in their technology classes throughout their school careers will give them the knowledge they need to use this all-important machine.

Denver Schools Upgrade Computer Labs

In a quest to help the Denver Schools students learn everything they can about technology, one school has recently received a grant to upgrade its computer lab. The grant, consisting of $106,000 was awarded to enable the school to purchase 30 new computers for its computer lab. Keeping the latest technology in place in the Denver Schools should be a top priority, but is unfortunately one that often sees cutbacks when the budget is in crisis. Too often, getting new technology to the schools just doesn’t happen. The Denver Schools must apply the monies they have towards books, reading and math programs, etc… and can’t buy new computers for all Denver Schools each year. While most families don’t do this, either, it is important for the Denver Schools to do their best to make sure that their students are familiar with how to navigate through cyber-space, and how to use technology in the first place.

In addition to the monies provided by the grant mentioned above to buy new computers, Denver Schools will be able to provide extensive tech training for all classroom teachers at that school. Of course, teachers can’t teach their students about new technologies let alone how to use them if they don’t know themselves. Often, we adults feel like the kids know more about our computers, MP3 players and DVD players than we do. But, in order to provide the students of Denver Schools with the best possible technological education, it is hugely important for the teachers to be prepared to help students attain this knowledge. That can’t be accomplished by handing out manuals and hoping for the best.

Many grown-ups are resistant to change and teachers are no exception. It can be difficult to get them to embrace new techniques in education, and the only way to reach all of them is to provide hands-on training. They can then take the knowledge they have acquired back to their Denver Schools classrooms and help their students learn the same things. This is one key part of the successful education of our Denver Schools’ students.
